The Preoperative Association is delighted to announce the first ever dedicated course for Preoperative Assessment Pharmacists. This course consists of 2 days of face-to-face small group teaching.


The training will cover the core skills required for effective medicines management and optimisation in the preoperative assessment clinic.


This course is suitable for band 7 or 8a pharmacists working in the field of preoperative assessment, independent or NHS sectors. 

Topics include:

  • Introduction to preoperative assessment
  • Principles and goals of preoperative assessment
  • Role of pharmacists in preoperative assessment
  • Anaesthetic considerations
  • Risk assessment in preoperative assessment
  • Principles of medicines management in the peri-operative period
  • Role of the pharmacy workforce in prehabilitation and medicines optimisation in long-term health conditions
  • Shared decision making with patients on discontinuing medications before surgery
  • Scenario-based interactive sessions
