New Toolkit Launch: Developing Pharmacy Roles in Preoperative Assessment

June 1, 2026

The Preoperative Association is pleased to announce the launch of a new practical toolkit:

Developing Pharmacy Roles in Preoperative Assessment.

Developed in collaboration with the Centre for Perioperative Care (CPOC) and the United Kingdom Clinical Pharmacy Association (UKCPA), the toolkit has been created to support the development, implementation and growth of pharmacy roles within preoperative assessment services.

As surgical patients become increasingly complex, pharmacy professionals play an important role in medicines optimisation, patient safety, risk reduction and service efficiency. Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can support safer perioperative medication planning, help reduce avoidable medicine-related cancellations, improve patient experience and strengthen the wider surgical pathway.

The toolkit provides practical guidance for organisations looking to develop or strengthen pharmacy involvement in POA. It includes information on workforce models, example pharmacy roles, business case development, Key Performance Indicators, education and training, research involvement and best-practice examples from established services.

To mark the launch, The Preoperative Association will host a free online webinar:
