Professor Beverley Hunt
OBE, FRCP, FRCPath, MD
Consultant in Thrombosis and Haemostasis,
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
Beverley Hunt is a British haematologist. She is an honorary professor of thrombosis and haemostasis at King's College London and a consultant in thrombosis and haemostasis at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. Her research concerns thrombosis, haemostasis, venous thromboembolism (VTE), antiphospholipid syndrome, and obstetric haematology. She co-founded Thrombosis UK and serves as co-chair of its board of trustees.
Hunt’s research focuses on preventing, diagnosing, and treating thrombosis and acquired bleeding disorders, including hospital-associated venous thromboembolism (VTE), risk assessment, and thromboprophylaxis.
Her work covers thrombosis in pregnancy and the postpartum period, anticoagulant use, and complications associated with antiphospholipid syndrome, inherited thrombophilia, and antithrombin deficiency. She also studies haemostatic disorders in critical care, surgery, trauma, and extracorporeal circulation, including major haemorrhage, coagulation testing, and anticoagulant and procoagulant therapies.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hunt researched coagulopathy and thrombotic complications in hospitalised patients. As a member of the UK Expert Haematology Panel, she helped describe vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia and develop clinical guidance.
In 2025, she became co-chair of the VTE working group for Element 1 of NHS England’s Maternal Care Bundle, published in January 2026 with an early-pregnancy VTE risk-assessment tool.
Her other research includes cancer-associated thrombosis, cerebrovascular disease in antiphospholipid syndrome, cardiovascular risk in haemophilia, kidney transplantation, and prevention of post-thrombotic syndrome.
Contribution to national and international guidelines
Hunt has contributed to guidelines on immune thrombocytopenia, heritable thrombophilia, thrombocytosis, and major bleeding after trauma. She served on NICE groups developing VTE guidance and quality standards, and its COVID-19 expert advisory panel. From 2022, she co-chaired the WHO’s living COVID-19 management guideline group.
Within the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH), she chaired the organising committee for its 2022 London congress and later co-chaired its subcommittee on physiological anticoagulants and thrombophilia.
Society memberships
Hunt co-founded the British Society for Haematology’s Obstetric Haematology Group in 2004, co-chairing it for 15 years, and was a founding member of its Education Committee. She serves on the Pulmonary Embolism Response Team Consortium board.
A founding member of the World Thrombosis Day steering committee in 2014, she chaired it from 2019 to 2022. She was elected to the ISTH Council in 2026.
